Have You Been the Victim of a Bad Headshot? | Studio Walz, Inc. | Lexington KY

Maybe you thought finding a good photographer will take a lot of time or all photographers are the same. But wait, since your neighbor calls themselves a photographer, you think hmm that’s good enough. Let’s see…cheap…quick…convenient…perfect!

Did you have one of these photographs below with bad lighting, terrible posing not to mention the unprofessional background?

A non-professional headshot says a lot about the person. Oh yes, a picture does say a thousand words.

The benefit of choosing a true professional photographer (not your neighbor, babysitter or coworker) is you will know you are getting a top quality headshot that portrays the image you want the public to see.

Here are some tips:

• Clothing Matters. Choose clothing that that portrays the kind of business you are working in. Potential customer/clients and prospective employers (maybe even a future date) will expect this.

• Location Matters. This means you can’t use that picture of you hamming it up at the last Kentucky Derby party. Sorry, that just doesn’t cut it. One of our professional backgrounds in our studio always works nice or an environmental location free of people and unwanted distractions. You should always be the center of attention of Your headshot.

• Posing Matters. Another reason a true professional photographer is a must. Scott will take several photographs of you in a variety of poses that are best for you.

• Lighting Does Matters. You have probably seen plenty of bad headshots. For example the subject is too dark or too light. Skin color almost non-existent or a nice color of orange. The lighting a so harsh that the cheeks and forehead are just bright white spots. The lighting is coming from above and the subject has eyes that look like a raccoon. We’ve all seen this so please don’t make the same mistake as others. Our headshot shows you in the perfect light.

Now that you are getting the idea of what to do and what not to do let’s include some more.

• A Selfie does not qualify as a headshot. We have all taken a few selfies in our lifetime and others that’s a few million. I know that the lighting in our cars looks good but that’s all that looks good. Just go ahead and hit the delete button if you are thinking of posting it as your latest and greatest headshot.

• The Mugshot. Oh yes, how many times I’ve heard that a coworker volunteered to take a photograph of the subject backed up against a wall. Here we go with all must have’s for a good headshot mentioned earlier in the bad category. The mugshot photo has a bad background, bad lighting (raccoon eyes), bad posing, bad clothing and so on. It’s just plain bad!

• Party Shot. A picture taken at the backyard barbeque with a red Solo cup in hand or with another revelers arm around you. Oh yes, this is when you see a published headshot with someone else’s shoulder in the picture and of course the face is blotchy and the eyes are glassy red.

The moral of this story is just because you think it’s a good picture of yourself does not make it a good headshot. Remember you want to portray your best possible self.

Let the new postings begin!

During the fall and the days leading up to Christmas we have the opportunity to photograph many families, children, seniors and weddings that we have time for little else. Scott and I love this time of year because we love meeting new people, it's like making new friends, and we get to catch-up with customers we haven't seen in a while. We are truly blessed to have a job that we get to be a part of so many families lives and to be fortunate to watch their children grow-up, photograph them through the years and then see them get married. So many of our clients are like our extended family. We are at our busiet during this time but it's like having a family reunion every week leading up to Christmas. Now this is a job you can love! So let me show you what we've been up to. Valorie

Rev Stephen Palmer | Lexington Ky Commercial Photographer

There are those people in our lives that we admire for many reasons and Steve Palmer is one of those people. He has played an important role in my life whether he knows it or not. You see, he has been the Associate Pastor of my church, Second Presbyterian Church, for many years and has been there for many important times in my life. He is now retired and will be missed by many but particularly by me. I was honored to be asked to photograph Steve for a wall portrait that will hang in our church. I have chosen two pictures to show you, one that now hangs at Second Presbyterian Church and one that I gave him as a personal gift. My best to Steve and his family, Scott.

White, Greer & Maggard Orthodontics | Lexington Ky Commercial Photography

Have you seen White, Greer & Maggard Orthodontic's new office in Hamburg? If you have, you've seen our portraits adorning their walls. We have been doing work for White, Greer & Maggard Orthodontics for many years and are honored to have our work hang in their office (Nicholasville office as well). The people in the portraits are actually their patients they send to us to photograph, then they use these images for advertising. What a great way to advertise is with your actual patients! Some may seem familiar to you, as you may have seen them in the Chevy Chaser/Southsider monthly magazines.

Also, you may have noticed that the pictures we are showing you are not just of our work but the interiors of their office. They actually have Scott travel to each office and photograph the interiors for later use on their website. Kind regards, Valorie

Whitney Pannell | Lexington Ky Commercial Photography

It was great to see Whitney Pannell again. I know we have photographed her at least three times for her real estate picture. She is one of those people you feel an immediate connection with. She has made quite a name for herself as a Realtor and we wish her continued success.

Erin Langfels | Lexington Ky Commercial Photography

We have exciting news from Erin Langfels as she is opening her own dentistry practice. What a wonderful time in her life and we wish her only the best. Since her new practice is cutting edge she wanted her image to compliment her new web site and practice. Since she is a natural beauty that wasn't difficult to achieve.

Ruby Wiant | Lexington Ky Commercial Photography

We have been photographing Ruby for many, many years and just love the time we spend with her. Ruby is beautiful inside and out. Even though this sitting was done last year for her CD cover I just felt I needed to talk about her. She is an inspirational Christian singer and she is called upon to travel most of Kentucky to share her gift of music.
